What is deconditioning?

This month I’m helping you make more sense of the deconditioning process – I mean, it sounds so technical, doesn’t it? A member of my Facebook community asked the above question, so I thought it was the perfect place to start.

What is Deconditioning?

When you look for this topic using sites such as Wikipedia – it really doesn’t help you make sense of deconditioning through the lens of Human Design – or other self knowledge processes or systems that exist.

I totally get this because when I first heard the words Deconditioning I thought – I’m just gonna say it – What the actual F***? It sounded like some technical process that wasn’t going to be fun, or even relatable to me. What I didn’t realise was that I had been deconditioning from many beliefs, thoughts, and knowings that didn’t actually belong in my world already. It’s a natural part of the process as you grow and evolve.

I like to refer to deconditioning as ‘unlearning’ (and I’m probably not the only person to say that). As you’re tapping into making more sense of the truth of who you are, a side effect of this is that you are moving away from those parts of you which no longer resonate with this new truth. When I look back on my Human Design experiment so far (I’m coming to the end of my 3rd year) I remember how I would explain to those who asked ‘it feels like something I can’t unknow’. And those who understood would smile and nod!

The Not Self

In Traditional Human Design, the man who first introduced us to it, known as Ra Uru Hu, spoke of the ‘Not Self’. All those aspects of you, your beliefs, your energy signature showing up in that moment, your behaviours which happen by default. All of these occur because you don’t know any different – and that’s fine. But understanding yourself through the lens of Human Design gives you empowering tools to take those necessary steps onward. Letting go of your old beliefs, old stories, old energies that don’t serve you, so you can absolutely meet your full potential.

Ra spoke about a 7 year process for deconditioning, who you falsely identify with, not who you actually are. Also relating to the time it takes for your old energy to be replaced by the new. However in reality, it’s an ongoing, evolving process. Not a one and done thing. Over time you see and experience shifts and changes, some big, some are smaller but all compound to bolster the sparking new version of you that’s making her way out into the world.

There are numerous things you can do aside from learning about your Human Design chart to keep moving forwards, including E.F.T (aka Tapping) and in my most recent training as a Quantum Alignment System specialist, I’m able to take you through a powerful process which brings that together with subtle body therapies and really cranks things up a notch or 3.

One of my favourite sayings at the moment is simply ‘Notice what you notice’

In doing so, you will find that some of the old stories you used to identify with have made their way, to be replaced by awe inspiring new ones. Awareness here is what’s key. If you pay attention to how your narrative is playing out, you’ll see those shifts (and also be able to recognise when you default into what Karen Curry Parker, my international mentor refers to as ‘stinking thinking’).

You can keep a journal for this purpose, remain curious and alert to what’s happening in your mind – you have a choice how you let that story play out, after all.
