Is it time for you to make a change in your life?
Are you one of those people who gets bored easily and changes things a lot, like me?
Or is change something you resist? Today I wanted to explore the difference and similarities in these.
- What can happen when you don’t change anything
- What can happen when you change so often, that the thing you need to change is making things more consistent
- How you can bring about empowering change that moves you forward from this place of stuck samey-ness. (I don’t think that’s a real word, but if you’ve been reading this you’ll know I like to make up words as I see fit!)
- What might happen as a result.
The thing about change is this
Major life change often comes about because the Universe is trying to tell us that we can’t stay where we are. Whether that be within the confines of a failing relationship, or time for our fledglings (aka children) to fly the nest, or to expand our horizons and change jobs or careers.
It can feel really big and scary when we contemplate it and take no action. We want change, but we don’t do anything different to encourage it or invite it in.
If you always do things the same, things stay the same
Recently I took up a little Yoga. I’ve never done it before, I’ve wanted to for years (like about 8 years!) but never ventured further than attempting the odd pose with no real intention behind it at all. On a recent holiday to the Canary Islands I decided it was time to do their daily yoga stretch class in the mornings, and i absolutely loved it. I had this warm fuzzy feeling. Finally I was doing something I had intended to do for – well it felt like forever! I began the day feeling energised (very much helped by the warning rays of the sun and it made me want to do it more. Finally I picked it back up again this week and I’m already noticing a shift in my energy, its wonderful!
Had I continued with this story that I never commit to new things
I do enjoy trying them, but motivating myself to do it – well, that’s another story – I would have been very down on myself for not venturing further than the intention. In my mid I would be disappointed in myself, and in my body and soul I would not reap the benefits either. I also learned something from my husband about trying all the different stretches and positions. ‘Why not try doing the same stretches every day, so you can learn them? Instead of trying to learn new ones all the time?’.
He knows me well – I’m a bugger for wanting to do something in as many different ways as possible – it’s part of the consistent energy in my Human Design (innovation energy). I’m so thankful that he understands that part of me so well.
What empowering change can you make today?
If change is something you feel you need – but you’re not sure where to start? Start small.
- Choose just one thing that you’d like to explore changing, maybe a habit or part of your routine you’d like to upgrade.
- Now commit to JUST doing that one thing differently in a way that supports you. Just one thing.
- Keep doing it – see how it makes you feel as you go – does it feel good to keep that change?
When you commit to making a change that supports you, magic starts to happen. In your heart and your mind you feel uplifted because you’re giving yourself a new level of support – and it feels good, the more you do it. Maybe next week you’ll add in another new thing?
Here’s a quick story about what happened when I changed one thing at a pivotal time in my life.
I was ready for change – I had done my ‘homework’.
It was October 2016. My terribly unhealthy, abusive, unsupportive relationship had just come to an end. I was standing in a place of feeling like I truly had control of my life once more – and it felt good (really good!). I wanted to take my sons out for the day, and I had this inspired idea that we needed to do things differently. Nothing major, but something that sent a strong signal that things were shifting. It was a beautiful, sunny, autumn day. Instead of heading out to our usual places, I took them somewhere different. I wanted to go somewhere that felt new, and had no bearing on my previous story.
We ventured to a new park, one with different play equipment, wide open space – oh and a coffee and ice cream van! (essential, in my opinion). To anyone else it might have seemed like a simple decision, but to me it was the most empowering choice I had made in a long time. I knew now that I was in the driving seat of my life, and I could choose again at any time, just as I had here. That’s what I want you to remember.
You can always choose again.
